What is Permaculture?
We cannot keep abusing the Earth as we have been doing it all along the history of humanity, and this is no longer a myth. Even when modern society has pretended to create a way of dissociating itself from the effects of its actions, and we somehow try to deny or repress the devastation that our way of living generates into the planet, the damage cannot longer be hidden. This is the reason why we need to change the way we have settled our relationship with the environment, that by the way it is nothing but the mirror image of how we relate with ourselves.
In the search for a more friendly way of subsistence within the planet, Permaculture comes out as a conducive path. It is an umbrella that compiles a vast variety of knowledge and techniques, some of them very old, some of them quite new. It uses them in a sustainable and efficient way to design a healthier relationship with the environment. These relationships have the peculiarity of allowing the self-regeneration of the elements that compound the environment, and the idea of a dynamic equilibrium becomes possible in a long term (and sometimes even in a short term).

According to Bill Mollison (co-creator of Permaculture) "Permaculture (permanent agriculture) is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of landscape and people, providing their food, energy, shelter, and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way. Without permanent agriculture there is no possibility of a stable social order" (Mollison, 1988, p. ix).
When we talk about permanent agriculture we are talking about a sustainable way of producing food, not only for the large orchards in the country side but for the small houses and apartments of urban ecosystems, too. In Samhita Academy we believe that everyone has a personal and social responsibility for procuring a healthier environment, and we all have the possibility of implementing smart solutions that allow us to take care of our duty.
Through this section we hope to spread the knowledge and designing techniques from Permaculture, in this way you will get inspired to implement some of them in your life. Who knows? You may start to grow your own crops, and grow yourself along with them.
