Inverted asanas
Inverted asanas reverse the action of gravity: The feet get free and toxins that may be accumulated on them get released in the blood stream and are eliminated. At the same time, the head receives a higher blood supply, giving more nourishment to the tissues of the encephalon. It allows to the pituitary gland to perform a better work, which activates the whole endocrine system. The breath becomes slower and deeper, maximizing the expulsion of carbon dioxide. Besides, it gives stimulation to the abdominal organs.
Examples of this group of asanas are Sarvangasana (said to be the queen of the asanas), Halasana and Sirshasana (said to be the king of the asanas).

- Psychologically, these asanas allow the person to get a new perspective about things, and a new way of thinking. They are useful reducing anxiety, improving self-confidence, increasing tolerance to stressful situations and improving concentration. Actually, yogis used them to improve the quality of meditation, refining their consciousness and exploring deeper levels of their minds.
- From an Ayurvedic point of view, they help people with Pitta dosha predominance to reduce the heat in their body and mind. Through the inversion of the sun, or solar plexus (the stomach and small intestine, the main Pitta area on the body) with the moon (symbolized by the palate), the cooling lunar energy is protected.
Note: Do not practice these asanas if your stomach is still digesting.
Tips ! You can practise these asanas with a folded blanket under your neck and shoulders. It will give you an extra support. Never perform them on a soft mattress or air cushions. Always, after each of these asanas, allow your body to recover your normal breathing, and then practise the counter pose.
