Despite your original constitution, the pass of the years, your lifestyle, the quality and quantity of food that you usually intake, the type of place where you live, the type of work that you have, among many other factors, can cause an aggravation (increase) or diminution of the original balance of your doshas. That may lead to diseases having a detrimental effect in your quality of life.
In Ayurveda, diseases are the result of the aggravation of one, two or three doshas in our body. They block our channels, disturb the secretion of waste products and our general functions, damage our tissues and agitate our mind. We can not say that doshas are bad within themselves ! It is just that the imbalance of the doshas, considering that right proportion of doshas that we had when we were conceived (or Prakrti), brings us some troubles.

Some signs as general weakness, constipation, involuntary tremors, pain in the joints, the lower back or the whole body, vertigo, insomnia, anxiety and having a restless mind are typical signs of a Vata aggravation in the body. In other words, some internal and external factor may have been contributing to hyper-stimulate or block the movement of Vata throughout the body, and that cause an exacerbation of its qualities. |
On the other hand, a general sensation of heat in the body, abnormal profuse perspiration, yellowish discolorations of the skin, eyes, stool and urine, fatigue, inflammations, skin eruptions or rashes, emotional sensitivity, and prone to feel anger, are signs that talk about a Pitta aggravation, or an abnormal predominance of the Pitta dosha (and its qualities) within the body. |
Finally, lost of appetite, indigestion, feeling of heaviness, or an unusual cold temperature, excess mucus, congestion, cough, swellings, increase of body weight, lack of motivation, tendency to oversleep, sadness and a nostalgic feeling are signs that reflect a Kapha aggravation. That means that the supportive function that Kapha has in our body has grow out of the healthy limits, and too much Kapha dosha has been accumulated inside of us. |
If I have an aggravation of one (or two, or three doshas), what can I do ?
Health in Ayurveda is a matter of balance. If you have an aggravation of one dosha, it means that you have an exacerbation of certain qualities. Therefore, you may have to diminish those qualities, cultivating the opposite qualities in your life. For example, if you are feeling an abnormal sensation of heat throughout your body, headaches, and you are feeling prone to be angry (signs of Pitta aggravation), you may want to eat cooling food like salads, fruits like coconuts, take some rest, avoid spices, avoid hot places and heating exercises (to name some basic recommendations).
However, sometimes it may be not that easy to find out your way back to balance. In those cases, it is advisable to consult a professional that can give you orientation about the best way to manage your present condition. Before you make drastic changes in your diet or your lifestyle, we recommend you to get some advice.
