- On a physical level, these asanas create a space in between the vertebrae that stimulates and release tension in some nerves that may have been under pressure, which has a positive effects on the whole body, but specially on the brain. It also works with the back muscles, legs and tendons, enhancing their capacities.
- On a symbolic, emotional, or well, psychological level, the forward bending asanas have a multiplicity of meanings. The first thing that can be said is that a forward bending involves a movement where, in a way, we close our chest, we close our body, and we stop looking at the outside world to start looking to ourselves. Through that movement we also go inwards: these postures stimulate a process of introversion. In connection with that, they also work with the human fears: it obliges you to face the primitive fear of being almost defenseless against attacks from the outside world. Another meaning is that working on forward bending is equivalent to stretching the stiffness or back-stubborn that one may have, it is related with developing humility, and overcoming the barrier of proud.

- From an Ayurvedic perpective, these asanas are beneficial for people with a strong Vata component, because they work on the lower abdominal area (the main site in the body for Vata accumulation). Specially those asanas performed in a sitting position are good for Vata predominant people, because they give a feeling of peace and quietness.
It is important to keep in mind that the bending is performed from the hips and NOT from the waist. Even when people may not be very flexible at the beginning, and may think that bending from the waist helps them to get further down, that kind of bending can cause serious injuries in a long term.
Note: People with any kind of back condition and those suffering from backache should consult a a competent Yoga teacher before practicing these asanas.
